Textual analysis of a content page

Again this content page is minimalistic, on the left hand side there is a collage of images of artists, album covers and cartoons, this almost takes the from of someones bedroom wall and looks informal, but it eye catching. The font used is bold, and large however connotes a simplistic and sophisticated feel. Again there are subheading where the pages are divided into sections, this is both informative and looks professional, the subheadings are in red to stand out from the rest of the page. Once again the colour font used takes the form of a newspaper and connotes information and importance.

Textual analysis of a content page

This content page almost takes the appearance of a newspaaper because of the connotations of these colour are those that are mainly used in newspapers. This makes it look more serious. The mast head also looks like that of a news paper, there is only one image and this is the main focal point. It is a low angle shot which makes the image look of importance. Again there is overlapping with text and images. The pages are seperated in to categories which is informative and helpful. There is an avertisement at the bottom which also looks like a newspaper advertisment.

Textual analysis of a content page

Again the font used is bold and there are three main colours used. The page is split up into sections to make it easier to understand and to make it look professional. The font used is informal as it it large and almost forms the appearance of someones handwriting, which looks creative. There are some images which breaks up all of the writing and summs up what the page is about in a photograph, on the photos there is pink writing overlapping them distuingishing the page number, this looks affective because again it gives it an informal tone and also looks creative. The mast head is the largest writing, the subheadings are fairly large because they are informative. The page almost looks like a post it board and the busy vibe means that the audience don't get bogged down with writing and the page is appealing to read.

Mood board of mast heads

This shows that the font used is bold, the font always seems to be over lapped by the artists head. It usually has the date and other information displayed above it. It uses colours which will stand out from their backgrounds and the colour of the artists hair.

headlines & main topics of Ziccc,

The Weekend Millionaires- There OWN story...

  • How they met
  • When they met
  • The next step
  • Behind the scenes of their music video

Images

The images I took were from a real live band, I took various images, close ups, medium close ups, low angle shots, and wide shots. This enabled me to have a wide variation to choose from and edit. The set was ideal, because there was a stage with instruments which consisted of drums, microphones and guitars. The lighting on them also helped because i needed some light on them because the background of my magazine would also be dark. The images where took at a real gig in a real bar location. However some of my close up shots where not of great quality because the camera shot cut off part of the models head, however having realised this i took some other close ups to improve this. I would now edit these photos in photoshop by cropping out the background in some cases and editing the brightness and contrast.

Planning

Genre- indie music, generally targeted at males.

The appeal of the artists i am going to feature is that they follow the style of some big bands we see in the media today, and it's a great oportunity to feature musical instruments and a real liveband.

There are some magazines that follow this genre for example Blender and NME, and having looked at these for inspiration I now know where I want to go with my magazine.

The features they include is information about bands and artists, competitions, images, advertisements and also fashion may be portrayed in these images.

Additional features:

My target audience is between 14-25 and generally males.

I am going to use bold font and overlap the artist on the font.

The name of my music magazine will be ZICCC, my reason for this is that it will amost be a colloquil abrieviated from music, i have taken the last sound of the word and spelt it in a different way to emphasis it and make it unique.

Codes and conventions of a music magazine.

Music magazines always have an established artist on the front cover.

They always display the name and a leading story about this artist.

The font is always bold to represent the rebellious stereo type we give to musicians.

Competions are sometime features and usually the prize is to go see a popular atrist.

There is always a bar code, and near this the date, price and website is usually stated, or the website and price may be stated on the edge of the magazine.

They usually contrast bright and dark colours so that everything stands out.

The artist usually looks into the camera.

There is usually other smaller images of other artists.

There is always short abrieviations of music news which are continued within the magazine.

There is always subheadings and main lines these are usually about the artist featured in the main image.

Rolling stones front page textual analysis

The magazine uses a famous artist to advertise the magazine.
Again over lapping us used and looks effective because it gives the artist in the main image the main focus on the page.
The title is in large font and the colour is simple as are the other colours, the colour scheme goes well together against the white background.
The fact there is no bar code insinuates that it isn't a published magazine, however the bar code could be on the back or side of the magazine.
This is not a typical music magazine, the colour scheme and image suggest that it is for a lower age audience and this alos loses the serious apprach with i have previously seen. Although it doesn't look as established it is still a genre of music magazine and follows different conventions due to the audience it is trying to reach.

Conventions of a standard magazine.

Large title- To make a statment and advertise the magazine. The title often connotes something you would associate with music or something catchy.

Dominating main image- Usually consists of a well known band or solo artist, their costume usually follows the coloured theme of the issue of the magazine. They usually look into the camera to show confidence and boldness.

Other featured images- There to intice the audience to want to read on, usually images of other bands or competitions. But they are purely there to give you an insite into what the magazine will contain and more often than not the catchy phrases create hype that is exagerated for this very purpose.

Barcode- This is used for purchasing reasons, and all magazines have them.

Synopsis- These are used as a brief summary of what the magazine contains.

Bold font- thats stands out from the page.

Colour scheme- always kept minimum and usually consists of three colours.

Setting- Usually plain background, however sometimes set in studios, or backgrounds to highlight seasons.

Statistics may be used to make statments and sometimes may be misleading, but make the reader want to read on.

The date is always included for reference

The price will always be included to inform the audience how much the magazine is.

Issue numbers may be included to incourage the audience to collect them.

Front page textual analysis

Again the main image is of a celebrity and the dark theme is consistant trhough the costume also. The use of over laping elemtents makes the magazine look professional and sophisticated and almost gives the artist a 3d effect. There is only use of white black and red which is simple but effective and connotes sex appeal and confidence. There is a free feature of another magzine included which makes the audience think that they are getting better value for their money, they have also made this feature a different colour this is a marketing tequnique. They have written the artists name in bold red letters across the front, the red text stands out from the background and because the image and background are dark this is needed to catch the audiences attention. Instead of including titles of stories or titles for topics they've named various famour people this is effective because it tell sthe audience it is all about celebrities and makes the magazine look established.

Textual analysis of a front page

The name of the magazine is simple and informative it immediately tells us what type of music this magazine focuses on. The main image is of musicians that fit into this genre of music, The colour scheme consists of yellows and greens which compliment one another but also emphasise what is being said. There is also other images which breaks up the harsh font and contrast of the artists faces. There are brief insights into stories to intise the reader to buy the magazine. The artists are all dressed in the same colour code as the themed colours of text. There is a bar code which is used for purchasing purposes. The camera shot is slightly a low angle shot. The text is bold and large this is almost following the stereo type of rock music been bold and rebellious.

First images

I decided to take various different camera shots so that i would have a variation to pick from. The first image is a low angle shot which is used to make the model look powerful. My second image is a close up used to show facial expressions. The third image is a medium close up again used to show emotion. The fourth image is a mid-shot used to capture the person from the waist upwards. The final photograph is a medium

LIAR

L- Language, this is important because the language is everything from images to graphics to written text. This is what sells the product. It is everything that goes into the appearance and also all of the lnguistic terminology. It is almost like a code that is followed. It applies to camera terminology such as camera angles, lighting, mise-en-scene, diegetic/non-diegetic sound.

Institution-This is the established company that produce the magazine. They focus on making profits. They design and create the magazine.

I-Ideology, this is what the aim of the product or text is. It's the reason that the magzine has been produced taking into account the subject, genre, audience, and purpose for example the purpose can be to inform, persuade, advise or advertise.
A-Audience is extremely important. There are different types of audiences in correlation to age, gender, social class and stereo typing. So the audience has to be considered carefully and what is produced has to be an outcome which will relate and influence this specific audience and make them buy it.

R-representation is how the product is representative of a certain image or idea. For example symbolism of colours, shapes, images. It's how the product looks and why all the elements are there. For example for a rock magazine dark colours maybe used to connote the rebellious stereotype it carries.

Brief

Main task: The front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by you- minimum of four images.
